I'd like to use this opportunity to start a discussion about streaming in secondary.
I teach in Ontario where students in secondary can take one of three levels of math - University, College, or Workplace. This whole approach is a closed mindset, suggesting that once in a track, students can't get better. I'd like to propose that subjects be taught as three courses or modules. For example, if a student wanted to take calculus, the student would have to take Introduction to Calculus. Then if the student were thinking of pursuing more math courses, the student would take Mastering Calculus. And if the student wanted to take calculus in university, he/she would take calculus at the third level which is Calculus Specialization. With this approach, there is no streaming. Students would have to option to take calculus at a deeper level by taking more courses. Each course would have a growth mindset and eliminate the closed mindset that exists. |
